My “From the Bottom of the Sea” sculpture on a beach in Abu Dhabi today. It shared a glass dome with some fish as a sculptural installation. Its sister sculpture visited and stayed in Azerbaijan, Baku. What is their next destination? Happy New Year 2012 and all the best from United Arab Emirates! Silvia
Some of you might know I have just returned from Azerbaijan. I exhibited at the 2nd International Exhibition in Gabala, which is 40 min plane journey away from the spectacular capital Baku. I delayed this blog article a couple of days, because I was fulfilled with the positively rich resonating emotions, and I found hard to share those, feeling almost speechless. A completely new world was put in front of me and I feel so grateful for this opportunity. I showed a couple photos to my parents, and their reaction was “fairy-tale like”. Quite right! My 4 day stay in Azerbaijan could be compared to a fairy-tale. The film crew was following our steps everywhere we went on excursions, even in restaurants. The mini buses which took us to the different sights and nature were escorted by a police car. We were looked after completely and we were shown the best the region has to offer.
The event was organized and fully supported by SEBA Cultural Exchange Association, which is SE for Seoul (Korea) and BA for Baku (Azerbaijan). A total of 18 different nationalities were represented with total up to 60 artists, most of them were painters. The whole event was very much supported also by Chairperson of SEBA Association Ruhangiz Heydarova and it was conducted by the Azerbaijan Culture Foundation. This way I’d like to say my wholehearted thank you to SEBA Association for having me at the event.
The exhibition was in one of the buildings of Qafqaz Resort Hotel in Gabala. The decoration was exquisite, with thousants of white roses and orchids, even the staircase was decorated and the atmosphere was just fantastic.
What did I take and value most on this event, were the people, new friends and professional contacts I’ve made. I’m very much looking forward to meeting them again and I truly hope, that I can visit Azerbaijan again soon.
I’ve had many ideas and inspirations while admiring the nature in Azerbaijan. I was born under the mountains back in Slovakia, and Gabala’s setting was incredibly similar to that. If I were to come back again I would visit the local rivers and the sea coast, and explore the stones and found objects as the sculpting material. My artwork is often connected to the sea, stones and water. For example some of the sculptures that were shown in Gabala are called „From The Bottom of The Sea Sculptures“ (the white plaster works) and the „Cornish Limpet“ (where I used found stones of Cornish beaches ). I’m in a dialogue with your Museum of Modern Art in Baku, and I sincerely hope we could collaborate together on a project. Fingers crossed for that!

I’m here in Baku. I’m typing from my grand hotel room in the centre of the town and thinking, the generosity of this nation is amazing. I was travelling from London with an artist from Wales, Andrew Evens. I’ll introduce Andrew in more detail very soon. I’m full of positive thoughts and feel like a princess in a foreign far culture. The buildings are somehow different, I’ve never seen architecture like that before. I’m waiting to find out, what the rest of I see is like. Later on this evening catching a flight to Gabala, where the exhibition will be held. I’m hoping to have time to post images as well. That is all for now, I’m off to see some sights in Baku. Have a great day and more blogging from Azerbaijan coming soon. : )
